HR Manager
The Footy League (NYC Footy) | Hybrid β NYC area (1β2 days/week in office) | Full-Time
About Us
The Footy League is the largest adult recreational soccer organization in the United States. We're a bootstrapped, fast-growing company currently operating in roughly 10 markets with a mandate to scale to 100+ markets over the next five years. We're building the foundational HR function now β this is our first dedicated HR hire, and the role will own the full employee lifecycle and compliance landscape as we scale.
The Role
We're looking for a hands-on HR Manager to take ownership of day-to-day HR operations and compliance for our team of 25+ employees and 100+ contractors across multiple states and entities (NYC Footy Corp and Footy Staffing LLC). This is a "do it all" role for someone who wants to build real infrastructure at a growing company β not administer a mature one. You'll take HR and compliance fully off leadership's plate, while flagging what needs executive input.
This role reports directly to leadership and will be the go-to resource for every employee and contractor on HR matters.
What You'll Own
Payroll & Compensation
Run and audit payroll across all markets
Maintain compensation records, pay bands, and salary change documentation
Manage state payroll tax registrations as we expand into new markets/states
Time Off & Leave Administration
Administer PTO, sick leave, and other time-off policies and tracking
Manage Paid Family Leave (PFL) and Short-Term Disability requests end-to-end, including required paperwork, carrier coordination, and any employer top-up calculations
Track and administer FMLA, ADA accommodation requests, and state/local leave laws as applicable
Expense Reporting
Own the expense reimbursement process and policy, including review and approval workflows
Performance Management
Run the annual review cycle: timelines, templates, manager enablement, and documentation
Support managers with performance improvement plans and formal documentation when needed
Employee Relations & General HR Support
Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions, concerns, and conflict resolution
Own onboarding and offboarding: new hire paperwork, I-9 verification, benefits enrollment, exit processes, and unemployment claims
Maintain and evolve the employee handbook and HR policies as the company grows
Hiring & Recruiting Support
Support leadership with job postings, candidate screening, and interview coordination as we grow the team
Own new hire logistics: offer letters, background checks, and a smooth path from acceptance to first day
Help build out repeatable hiring processes (job description templates, interview scorecards, reference checks) as we scale into new markets
Compliance
Manage multi-state remote work compliance, including Workers' Compensation and Disability Insurance registration and requirements as employees work from different states
Monitor and ensure compliance with employment law as we enter new markets/states (wage & hour, sick leave mandates, pay transparency laws, etc.)
Maintain compliant, audit-ready personnel records across both entities
Support state insurance audits and other regulatory filings
Contractor Management
Manage contractor payments and ensure timely, accurate processing
Support proper worker classification
Maintain contractor agreements and required documentation (W-9s, 1099s, etc.)
What You Bring
2+ years of full time experience in an HR function (HR generalist, HR coordinator, HR manager, or similar)
Working knowledge of payroll, leave administration, and multi-state employment compliance (NY/NJ experience a plus)
Comfort handling sensitive employee matters with discretion and sound judgment
Strong organizational skills β you can juggle recurring processes (payroll, reviews, leave requests) without dropping details
Clear, professional written communication; comfortable drafting policies and employee-facing documentation
A builder's mindset β you're excited to create process and infrastructure, not just maintain what already exists
Comfortable working in a lean, bootstrapped environment where you'll own things end-to-end rather than delegate to a large team
Nice to Have
Experience with HRIS/payroll platforms (e.g., Gusto, Rippling, ADP, Justworks)
Experience supporting a company through multi-state expansion
Familiarity with contractor-heavy or hybrid employee/contractor workforces
PHR/SHRM-CP certification (not required)
Compensation
$65,000-$75,000 base salary, commensurate with experience. A formal compensation and scope review will take place at 12 months, given the breadth of responsibility this role takes on early.
What Success Looks Like
Within 90 days: payroll, time off, and expense processes are running smoothly with no leadership involvement; you've audited current compliance gaps across both entities and states
Within 6 months: you own the full leave/PFL/disability process independently, the employee handbook is current, and you've built a repeatable framework for compliance as we enter new states
Ongoing: HR and compliance are fully off leadership's plate, employees have a trusted go-to resource, and the company is audit-ready at all times
